The EANS brought together 250 neurosurgeons in Sofia
Within five days, between January 25 and 29, 2026, Sofia brought together 50 of the most authoritative international lecturers in the field of neurosurgery, who trained 250 young neurosurgeons from across Europe.
The event was held as part of the International Course in Spinal Neurosurgery of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), hosted by the Pirogov neurosurgeons Corresponding Member Prof. Dr. Nikolay Gabrovski and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nikolay Velinov.
The forum reinforced Bulgaria’s position as an established center for highly specialized medical education and a platform for the exchange of knowledge and experience among leading specialists from various European countries. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the latest advances and trends in the treatment of spinal disorders.
“For the second time we are hosting such an event, which, together with the European Congress of Neurosurgery held in Sofia in 2024, is a clear sign of the trust placed in us and in Bulgarian neurosurgery. I am pleased that through these steps we are establishing ourselves not only as part of the European neurosurgical community, but also as a reliable partner in the development of European neurosurgical knowledge,” shared Corresponding Member Prof. Dr. N. Gabrovski.
The training focused on modern principles, clinical approaches, and best practices in spinal surgery, including both theoretical lectures and practical sessions aimed at improving the skills of young specialists.
Spinal surgery is a highly specialized field of medicine that deals with the surgical treatment of diseases and injuries of the spine and spinal cord. It includes the treatment of herniated discs, degenerative diseases, spinal deformities, tumors, infections, and traumatic injuries.
Modern surgical techniques aim not only to relieve pain and restore function, but also to provide minimally invasive approaches, faster recovery, and improved quality of life for patients.
